Eastern Washington Connections and Inquiry
Math Science Partnership Project

This is a three year program that provides professional development for approximately 50 math, science and technology teacher partner groups teaching in middle and high schools.

The partnership includes ESD 101, Chewelah, Cusick, Lind, Tekoa and West Valley-Spokane, Central Valley, East Valley, Freeman, Liberty, and Mead (total consortium enrollment: 31,261).  Higher education partners are Eastern Washington University, Community Colleges of Spokane and (evaluator) Whitworth College.

Three annual cohorts will study one or more topics relevant to Eastern Washington from a math/science/technology perspective.  Parallel to content study will be an instructional component involving training in inquiry methods of instruction as well as assessment training.  The training will be done by college faculty from EWU and the Spokane Community Colleges.

Special emphasis will be on long term, continuous pedagogical approaches involving math and science teacher collaboration.  Collaboration will be further encouraged through a formal pairing of cross-district study teams organized by common interests, issues or subjects.  Team members will employ specific techniques, observe each other and provide feedback on what worked well and what didn't.  This exercise will allow participants to capture and share their knowledge.  Initial pairings will be:  Team one - Central Valley, Cusick and Lind; Team Two - East Valley and Tekoa; Team Three - Mead and Chewelah; Team Four - West Valley, Freeman and Liberty.

Collaboration between cohorts also will be established by inviting some of the participants from the first group to return as trainers in the second year.  Similarly, members of the second year cohort will be invited back for the third year's activities.
